Default SES light

Got a SES (Service Engine Soon) light early last week on my 4 cylinder. Everything still seemed to be running OK. Got into the dealer & they said it was a P011 code. Intake valve timing (IVT) error. They changed the oil and filter, and said sometimes the timing sensor gets dirty and this should take care of it.

SES light came on again on Friday. Took it in this morning and they said the IVT solenoid needs to be replaced. They will have one in 3 days, in the mean time it's OK to drive it.

Any of you know if this has been a issue with the 4cyl?

No the 4 cylinder has been around a long time. Sometimes you just get a bad part. I drove the 4 cylinder in my 2000 Frontier 115,000 mile and she never saw the dealership. As a matter of fact I never even changed the plugs. Just oil and filters, even had the same tires................for $12,000 she was one great little pickup!

Thanks for the encouragement Squid. These things can happen even to the best of them. I’ll keep you all updated on the fix.

I have the V6, turned out to be a faulty gas cap. Took the dealer 4 visits to properly diagnose.

I had a similar issue. P0442 code "Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)". Nice to have a handheld OBDII scanner in the toolbox.

Dealer leak tested the fuel system and found no problem.

Haven't had the issue since, though. I've chalked it up to the gas cap not sealing correctly at first.

Got the intake valve timing control solenoid replaced last Thursday. Couldn't tell any difference in the performance and the SES light is staying off. Hope that's the end of that.

Obtuse mentioned he has a OBDII reader. Perhaps those of you that know about these could post a thread on them. I've seen some inexpensive ones at Amazon, but I'm not sure about what to be aware on these.
