Default Brakes

Did anybody have to replace their front pads and rotors yet? I had mine in for service yesterday and they are telling me my front brakes are shot at just 42,000 km (they started to squeek). And they want $600 (Canadian) to replace them.
I told them to put it back together and I would find aftermarket parts and do the repair myself.
Seems a little early for brakes to need replacement. I was not impressed.

There are a lot of factors in the brake area. Are you doing any towing?
Do you do a lot of city driving?
On avg my brakes are usually good for around 30,000 miles but I had a Chevy 2500 that you only got 21,000 because they used an undersized rotor.
Do you feel any kind of drag when you let of the gas or costing down a hill? Then they might not be retracting correctly.
Have you checked any of the Frontier forums to see if they have the same problem?
I don't have enough miles on mine yet to see how they hold up.

Well, I found some 'cheap' cross drilled rotors and pads on ebay for about $150 Canadian shipped to my door. They look decent and the install only took about 1 hour for both sides. I will give you a report in a few months to see how they are holding up.
The way I look at it, if I have to replace these things every 6 months, I'm still saving a lot of money. Here's a link to the ebay auction.

Thanks for the tip on the brakes BlackEquator. Is there any noticeable difference in the braking or pedal feel with these? I sometimes think the pedal seems a little soft and some braking distances taking a little too long.

Not a huge difference, but much smoother and quieter with the new parts. I always found the brakes a bit soft on this truck, especially when towing our travel trailer.

The weird thing about the brake pads when I disassembled everything was the fact that the outside pads looked maybe 60-70%, and the inside pads on both sides were shot. So, it appears that the inners wore a lot quicker than the outers. The dealership told me that my rear brakes looked fine when I had them take a peek at my last oil change service, so that was good news.

It is something to keep in mind if you do visual inspections of your brakes from time to time. If you hear any brake squeeking or noise, make sure you take care of it right away before you have to replace rotors.
